LOS ANGELES, CA–First off, before I reveal the final score, let me just say that this was one of the best and toughest games I have ever played. For three quarters, anyway. Halftime score: 7-6. Final score: 31-6. The game started off with Chris Markey’s 71 yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage.
It was a weak-side counter that no one saw coming. That would be the Bruins’ only score in the first half.
The USC secondary was by far the best I’ve faced all season. It seemed like they had 15 players on the field and most were DBs. Johnson was completely shut down, going 2-14 for 42 yards with an INT, although he did manage to score a rushing TD late in the game.
The defense was solid during the first half, holding the Trojans to two field goals. Turnovers and special teams were the words of the day. The Trojans had 4 turnovers (2INTs, 2 Fumbles) and the Bruins had 3 (1INT, 2 Fumbles).
Mario Sanford hit a 50 yard field goal early in the 3rd quarter to put the Bruins up 10-6. The Bruins picked off the Trojan’s QB late in the 3rd and the floodgates opened.
Kwame Huff forced a fumble, and Marty Hampton forced another, and recovered both.
The defense stat sheet reads like a all-star line-up.
Kevin Brown: 6 tackles (3TFL), 2 sacks
Kwame Huff: 5 tackles (1TFL), 1 forced fumble
Marty Hampton: 3 tackles, 1 forced fumble, and 2 fumble recoveries. He was voted Pac-10 defensive player of the week.
The Bruins took home the Victory Bell and captured the Pac-10 title. UCLA is now ranked 15 in the BCS, 14 in the Media, and 18 in Coaches Polls (see previous post about Coaches bias).
The win earned the Bruins a spot in the Rose Bowl against bitter Big-1o champ Minnesota, who went 12-0 and is #2 in the Media, but #3 in the BCS.
